Nintendo Wii U Teardown

Anandtech: When Nintendo announced the Wii U there was a lot of interest in its hardware specs. The new console could very well end up the fastest kid on the block thanks to the sheer age of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. I wasn't all that interested in the Wii U, but I did want to get a look at the silicon inside so I grabbed a unit and went into teardown mode.

underpowered console is underpowered

ChrisW4165d ago

That's what I kept saying about the other consoles!!!

Oh you do? You think the 6/7 year old consoles are lacking? Huh, what an odd thought.

Now, back to Wii U. A system with a GPU slightly more potent than the ps3/360, a weaker CPU (according to Tecmo), and larger but slower RAM.
In 2012.

Yes, I do.

Every time a new console (ie, PS3 & 360) debuts, many people hit the forums saying that the specs are ahead of the curve. They were not. Are not. And never will be.

Specs mean nothing, it's about the games.

Look at Black Ops II on PC, now compare to the console versions, you'd think the PC would destroy a 6yr old console in visual effects and everything but it doesn't. People keep shouting PS4/360 is gonna blow away the Wii U but who cares when company's will port to all 3.

you don't understand how game development works do you? The actual developer would have to make the game specifically optimised for the PC, in which case they could ramp up the graphics by a factor of 10 if they wanted to.

Check Max Payne 3, Sleeping Dogs and Crysis 2 for much improved graphics over the console versions. The devs for those games took the time to specifically work on the PC version.

no, the developers work to the large install base, PC's are ahead but aren't as popular as the consoles plus piracy is more of an issue. The next xbox and ps4 and PC all combined will mean a much larger install base than the wii u on it's own I would expect. So developers will switch to making more demanding games for the 3 devices that can play them- exactly what happened to the wii when people said it wouldn't... :s

So is it more powerful than the 360 or ps3?

Flavor4164d ago

So it will all come down to the quality of nintendo's games.

Like.. uh... you know, that game with the guy who.. um, the one with mario?
