Sony Interactive to place 'bigger emphasis on PlayStation VR'

VRFocus reports on that news that Sony Computer Entertainment has merged with Sony Network Entertainment to make Sony Interactive Entertainment.

sonicwrecks3004d ago

If Sony are going to start reshaping the business to this degree that's great news for PSVR fans.

Anarki3004d ago

I really hope they do, unlike the Playstation Move which got almost no backing from Sony. It's all about that price sweet spot if this will do well or not.

gizmig3004d ago

Keeping the future in mind Sony is playing a smart move by focusing on VR playstation.

sonicwrecks3000d ago

They don't really have a lot of choice of course, they've so much invested in it they simply *have* to make it work.

gizmig3000d ago

It is not the matter of choice it is the matter of what their potential customer wants I guess.

Retail dismayed by £500 Oculus Rift

The Oculus Rift is too expensive and lacking in must-have games, UK stores have warned.

But VR is an exciting new area for the global games market and, in time, Oculus Rift could still emerge as the market leader.

sonicwrecks3017d ago

"no-one has shown a game that works" - Are you kidding me? Which retail chain said that?? There's already loads out for the Gear VR, Sony has been showing of games all over the place as a major part of all their shows for the last 4 months. Oculus have shown games off, there are all sorts on VR Share and the store already has many examples the big names of which have all been at trade shows for the past 6-12 months.

I've been saying this. A lot. But, I really want a teardown by someone that knows the cost of these parts. Great quality device but I really didn't expect sensors, a screen, and accessories to be this price. I was thinking it would be $500 tops.

The support PC and PS4 are getting for VR is tremendous. It will help both platforms a lot. Games on Oculus and Vive will come to PS4. Games on PSVR will come to PC VR. Both markets have a huge marketing budget which adds a lot of publicity for competitor VR as well.

Maybe retail outlets need to go beyond the usual customers' and send flyers/post on their websites the various use of VR-tech to attract the engineering, military, medical community.

Someone in the retail sector needs to post a valid video example that VR isn't just for gaming.

donwel3014d ago

£500 is a LOT of money for the average consumer (you could probably get a decent spec PC for around that price), one would hope that the price drops fairly soon after release. Just for comparison the PS4 was £349 when it was released.
Obviously people will buy it on release because it's new tech and the fact that it's VR, but whether it will have the staying power at that price? Really too early to tell at the moment I think.

ChrisW3014d ago

Okay... So, there may not be a killer solely VR game out there, but there are plenty of games already out on PC that can be played. Some of the need a little finagling, but they are playable and enjoyable.

thorstein3014d ago

is this going like the E3 announcement of the price point for the x1 and ps4?

will PSVR be cheaper and thus steal the market?

sonicwrecks3014d ago

One of the reasons that nobody wanted to say anything was everyone was waiting for everyone else. Now for Sony it's probably going be a case of how much they think they can get away with losing money on each unit.
