Toyota to launch first hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle for about $70K

Toyota has hung a price tag on its first commercial hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.

And it's not cheap: 7 million yen, which converts to roughly $70,000, £40,000 or AU$73,000. That does, however, make the pricing competitive with the all-electric Tesla Model S. The Tesla retails for close to $70,000 in the US, £40,000 in the UK and AU$97,000 in Australia.

Very cool. Still, I'd be worried about wrecking one of these things! All that compressed hydrogen scares me!

Liquid H although highly inflammable, at the right pressure can yield enough explosive force to rival nitroglycerin many times over...

So take that into account when you step on that gas pedal on your spanking new hydrogen cell fueled vehicle.

Lets hope crush testing for these cars will be as exhaustive as possible.

So, if there's a leak, do we blow up like in Terminator?

Rute3543d ago

That is a fascinating issue. Just imagine the possibilities for Hollywood movie makers.

Since regular gasoline powered vehicles blow up in films like they were loaded with TNT, then the hydrogen vehicles must have the potential to become weapons of mass destruction.

when is toyota gonna get their designs back to looking smart again?

the last good car they designed was like late 90s. since then they all look clunky and chunky instead of low and sporty. not to mention the proportions. the wheels look too small for the car. 17" rims looks like 14"s

Grap3542d ago

It's more like a test car.. you aren't going to see this car replace camry or anything.

KingPin3542d ago

thats whats more worrying...

have you seen how smart toyotas concept cars look compared to the rubbish they put into production?

now even their concept cars look like ass...god only knows how crap the actual cars are gonna look.

I think when I finally get around to driving Im going witha tesla once they make a tons of charging stations in the uk.

iamnsuperman3543d ago

You should probably hold your horses on that one. Building an electrical infrastructure for those cars whem we already depend on non environmentally friendly ways of making electric the whole venture is completely anti productive. This is why I hate the extricate car movement and how people claim it to be Green. Sure we don't polite our cities but we are still going to have to increase are pollution just to deal with the added load of cars needing electricity.
