Apple Finds It Difficult to Divorce Samsung

WSJ: Apple is finding that breaking up with Samsung is hard to do.

For evidence, look no further than Apple's effort to find a company other than ferocious rival Samsung to make the sophisticated chip brains used in Apple's iPads and iPhones.

It may seem to some that this would be easy, but they depend on each other too much.

Samsung's stock took a 6% hit, or $10B in market cap lost, when it was RUMORED they were losing Apple chip contract last year.

Samsung doesn't depend on Apple at all. They have the entire process by themselves. They are a company with variety of products, whereas Apple depends on their 2 main products only.

Well, the piece of information I provided above firmly indicates the opposite.

It doesn't even take an expert to prove you wrong. Nobody is saying Samsung would collapse without Apple, but just look at how many iOS devices are sold everyday. With Samsung being Apple's largest supplier, you think they wouldn't be missing out on a huge sum of money if Apple walked away?

nucky means that apple wont decide samsungs fate.
their stock might take a hit but in the end samsung has many quality products which will sell well and keep samsung afloat whereas Apple only has two.

tell me, if Apples next chip manufacturer produce lower quality chips to that of samsung that are over-priced <like all apple products> do you honestly think people will buy apple devices if they know this? would you?

Apple is finding it hard to break away coz no other chip manufacturer is able to produce the high quality that Apple expects.

Qualcomm could do it in A heartbeat. I felt this way since the galazy s. snapdragon FTW.

@KingPin
That is one big "IF". And the matter of fact is, it's not the quality of the chips produced that is the problem here. It's the quantity.

The reason Apple can't leave Samsung so easily is because Samsung is so big and can provide them with enough volume in short periods of time, whereas other suppliers would need much more time, and Apple doesn't like that.

That's the whole dilemma here. It's not about the quality. It's either you can make enough of them, or can't.

No one is indispensable!
That just means oportunitys of business for others or even another place for apples money.

IceKoldKilla3940d ago

Hahaha! So basically Samsung gets money for every iPhone and iPad? HAHAHAHA! Had no idea! Could be I'm wrong about each time one is sold but the point is Samsung is making money off Apple TOO!

In2iti0n3940d ago

Exactly. Which makes them vulnerable to Apple pulling their business from them.
