i remember using freeware called anim8or about 10 years back.
seemed good enough as an introduction to animation and 3d modeling.

I'm in the process of teaching myself ToonBoom Animate through the video tutorials on their site and the resources on their forums. It's definitely not a "simplistic" kind of program, but it seems like ToonBoom, Flash, and Maya are the industry standard programs used for animations. I'm an audio guy, and I'm versed in many of the different industry standard digital audio workstations out there, so transitioning to animation is quite different and definitely a challenge, but I'm enjoying learning it and it's an asset I'll need to know as I'm creating my own web comic and cartoon series.
