Direct X's problem is that because it's backwards compatible, it means they really can't do much better. The other problem is that it started from OpenGL, like a fork for Microsoft's own use.

We don't know about the next Xbox yet (I expect it to be the same), but the PS4 at least support features beyond Dx11 and OpenGL 4.0. I too expect 11 to be the new PC standard, but there is possibility for 11.5 or maybe even 12.

DX is pretty much a PC thing from the start so it is up to AMD's interest (being stuck with both next gen consoles) to keep it from moving forward and giving it's competitors an edge. MS is not looking keen in evolving the DX since that will only make make a mess of it's unified Windows 8 platform while AMD would certainly benefit a lot more from that since it's closest competitors won't have much to go on.

Current gen consoles took up a lot of PC features such as DX9, installation and patches while next gen finally took up the PC's own architecture. The only PC exclusive feature that next gen consoles haven't emulated is the hardware upgrades. They really need to kill that quickly (due to the PC kept showing up with even shinier DX effects when their consoles are just a few years old). With mere software-based updates/innovation, any devices, be it locked down consoles or open PCs, can be upgraded with insignificant differences between them.

Kick it to the 'CURB'. As in where the trash cans are for trash pick up.

Have never heard of kicking it to the curve (is it might come back to kick us). :)
