Last year, there was a series of very troubling rulings by a district court in a case related to the criminal prosecution of Kim Dotcom. This wasn't, technically, part of the actual criminal case against him, but rather a separate effort by the government to steal his money. We've been covering the ridiculous process of civil asset forfeiture for a while, and it's really problematic in general. In Dotcom's case, it's something of a farce.

The guy's a career criminal, stealing access codes and phone cards and selling the information as a kid to embezzlement and insider trading that helped him steal millions even prior to this whole mess, spending years on the run from authorities after. I still don't get why people defend this guy. If a guy is convicted of multiple accounts of rape his entire adult life, who in their right mind would let them go out with their daughter on the off chance that he's suddenly changed? If a man steals millions in a bank robbery and is caught, you better believe he's doing some serious jail time, not getting a slap on the wrist and then let out to go spend those millions he made from his criminal endeavours.
It's ridiculous. Even if the current case of piracy and money laundering is thrown out because of the way it was investigated, are people really that stupid to trust this guy ever again, given his long criminal history? There's no way I'd trust this thief with my personal information or data.
As seems to always be the case with dealing with piracy, one step forward, two steps back.
