4K UHD vs 1080p And What You Need To Know About It

ETECHMAG: A lot of companies are coming out with 4K ultra high-definition (UHD) televisions and comparing it with 1080p resolution, but what does it all mean? Why does it matter to you? How does it compare to the technology we’re using now? Let’s take a look.

hopefully 4k doesnt go the way of High end music files. ex a 10mb mp3 vs a 170mb music file.

SnakeCQC4109d ago

apparently 4k movies are going to take something like 10 terabytes per movie so its 10tb(uncompressed 4k file) vs 20gb(1080p blu ray)

pompombrum4109d ago

10tb? Surely that's wrong..that's a ridiculous amount.. would beat piracy though.

2pacalypsenow4109d ago

They will prob compress it to 100gb Blu rays by the time 4k is mainstream we will prob have 1tb BD

ABizzel14109d ago

I think he meant 10GB. I can't see 10TB.

Speed-Racer4109d ago

The estimates are somewhere in the 200-500GB range. Could be higher depending on the length, sound quality, etc.

no its true change

add ractical at the end of the link

dirthurts4109d ago

What? 4k is exactly twice the resolution of 1080p, thus taking about twice the space. (unless the frame rate is increased from 24fps, then you have a little more math)
Where are you guys getting this math?

chcolatesnw4109d ago

@dirthurts
4K is 4 times 1080p amount of pixels, so 4 times the size. And today's blu ray movies are more than 20gb, they are closer to 50 for a high quality transfer. Also, if it were 10 tb in size, that wiouldn't beat piracy, because people would just download 1080p version or a compressed/lower bitrate 4k version.
but 4k movies will most likely be 4x50Gb max and at first probably come split on 2-3 blu ray discs until larger format arives

Speed-Racer4108d ago

@dirthurts - Sizes increase exponentially, not on a linear basis because both width and height of the streams are increasing, not just one side.

I love FLAC.

and btw, they said a new encoding standard is supposed to surface soon that compresses this content to match the size of current "full" high definition content.

ATi_Elite4108d ago

Unless you got a 60" TV or bigger then 4K is not worth it!

1080p works just GREAT all this other crap is just a marketing tool to sell TV's

Hell get a Large screen 1080p TV and connect it to a HTPC to bring out the best of your movies and TV shows.

_Q_4109d ago

I've seen articles and articles about how Blu Ray can go upto 500GB + I don't think it the medium that will have to change but the players. This next go round I think content deliver will be mostly digital and proprietary at least until a unified format is decided. I hope we don't dump Blu Ray and just expand the capacity of the discs.

johnsonbat4108d ago

Woah, this conversation is way too nerdy for me.

etechmag4108d ago

It will all come down to compression, and I am pretty sure that they're going to be able to bring it out on Blu-ray disks. They can probably save space by cutting out the extras, and have that delivered in a different format.
