U.S. Internet Users Pay More for Slower Service

Bloomberg - Terry Huval is a large, friendly man with a lilting Southern accent who plays Cajun fiddle tunes in his spare time. He is also the director of utilities in Lafayette, Louisiana. “Our job is making sure we listen to our citizens,” he says.

In recent years, the citizens of Lafayette have been asking for speedier Internet access.

It's so true! (looks at att bill) Yep! it's definitely true.

It's a real shame that cable & telephone companies would hinder progress than promote it. A city should be able to provide the best it can give it's population.
If fiber is better then why are these corperations still holding onto the antiquated copper wire. The burning question I have is who's allowing this backwards-ness to continue.

"The burning question I have is who's allowing this backwards-ness to continue."

the answer is the consumers. as long as they keep paying whatever prices the telecom companies want, the companies have no reason/incentive to improve the product/service.

its like if you made a POS product, and sold it at a price that people were willing to pay. would you go out of your way to spend more money improving that product or sit on your ass knowing that everyone in the industry isnt going to perfect your product either so why should you waste money.

It's easy to say US consumers are idiots for paying so much for DSL or cable. The problem with that is that most people don't have much of a choice, it's either one of the two or nothing.

You don't see many offering fiber in the US.
Many telecommunication corporations such as Comcast or At&T would seem to be adverse to having a fiber network for consumer use. They would give anyone trying to establish a fiber network a hard time, even go so far as to lobby against.
It's about more than consumers who pay more for less, it's also about a limitation of progress.

The Minimum Internet Broadband Speed Standard in North America to my knowledge is still 4mb. (you can thank the FCC for that)
