How long can I keep using Windows 7?

holy sh*t so do i. not for gaming though. but my other pc has been and still is running on windows XP. i don't think microsoft will support windows 7 for much longer its a waste of money,work force and time.

Well since you are on that, and probably don't run Windows 7, or any Linux-based OS, or XP on another computer, it'd also be your only OS for 5 years.

I wouldn't call any Linux distro "stable" unless you compile the OS for your system... the OS isn't any more stable when it's generically compiled

Linux not stable? What are you smoking? As long as your drivers are stable, the OS will be stable as the binaries are exactly the same for each system!

It's obvious this fellow knows nothing about the Linux kernel, granted a custom compile does enhanced your performance... both generic & custom are very stable!

They don't need to stop OS support. All they need to do is upgrade the .net framework, direct x, and other internal development features.

Microsoft is saying they'll support the OS end of cycle. What they aren't saying is we're keeping them updated with cross compatibility.

What good is an end of life cycle if a new direct-x or .net frameworks upgrades are only created for windows 8? If developers make it a requirement people with older OS versions are SOL, right?

It's simple If these features are limited only the latest OS kernels it's not like you can install products designed for them it on an older OS.

I had a product that was created for XP. A dev decided that he wanted to develop the new .net 4.5. Suddenly the XP OS became incompatible, He had to create software for .net 4.0 to remain compatible. The problem was bugs in the 4.0 code where fixed in 4.5. Since 4.5 was a REPLACEMENT to 4.0, he needed another system without 4.5 installed to insure compatibility.

Think about it.

I switched to Windows 8 last week and I'm loving it. Seriously this hate on Windows 8 is completely unfounded. The great thing about Windows 8 is you can have it both ways. Want a tablet UI for your laptop or all in one PC? It can do that. Want the full desktop experience? It can do that too.

Another great thing about Windows 8 is that the simplified start menu made Windows easier for my child to use. Now he spend more time on my desktop than he does on his iPad.

So if a 6 years old can use Windows 8 I don't see why all these "adults" are bitching it up.

Absolutely no one is complaining that 8 is too hard to use. The main issues are that the tablet part of the OS gets in the way and the performance isn't any better....UNLESS you're using a tablet, there is little reason to bother using 8 over 7.

How is the performance not better in Windows 8? You need to stop parroting the haters and actually give the OS a chance. There's a host of memory optimization all over the place.

Here's another reason I love Windows 8. The install size is smaller making it very SSD friendly.

I can see why some people hate the Modern UI. I totally get it. But even that is optional if you know how to use Google.

Bolts is right... Windows 8 handles memory much better then 7. My only issue is with some drivers that cause issues.

I agree Bolts. I really don't get the stick that people are giving MS for Windows 8. For me If you want tablet/home laptop just for home use for brewing the web checking emails and some document work Windows 8 RT is by far the best option as it is an Ipad and Laptop in 1.

The Market place is alittle low on apps at the moment but there is more and more added each day.

Then if you want a full blown OS to do everything your home pc dose now but also in a Tablet format Windows 8 pro is by far the best on the market.

I am running windows 8 on my 3 year old Laptop for work at the moment and not had any issues with any software and it performs a lot better than it did with Windows 7 on and I have less issues.

I am now waiting to see what the Surface Pro is like later on this year and then decide between that and the Samsung windows 8 pro tablet/doc as it is an I5 with 4GB of ram.

I agree about the new start menu it is a lot easer to use than the old one as it is all there for you and as soon as you install something it sticks it on the new start screen.

For me Windows 8 is the best all round OS out there that can be used on any form factor pc and I think MS are really on the way up with Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

windows 8 actually has better benchmarks than windows 7. Sure the METRO part of windows 8 is definitely strange after being all windows OSs. The Metro addition isnt much of a hightlight for me than the improvements in performance and memory management. Heads and shoulders above windows 7. The presentation which focuses on Metro definitely has an effect on avid pre-Windows8 users.. namely scoffing at it.

I will have no issues with win8 if it is able to play games with the same performance as win 7 or better.

Also it has to support my work software which it does fortunately.
