The era of Japanese consumer electronics giants is dead

CNET:
Not that long ago, Japanese companies such as Sony, Panasonic, and Sharp were considered premium brands.

These days, the Japanese consumer-electronics giants have largely been reduced to also-rans, many of which struggle just to turn a profit. Today, Sony's debt was downgraded for the second time in a month to one notch above junk status by Moody's.

lol how? because the Koreans and Apple make better products?

wishingW3L4173d ago (Edited 4173d ago )

the thing is that they don't! That's why it's sad. Panasonic is still making the best plasmas in the market but due to the exchange rates Japanese products tend to be more expensive than the Korean ones and people just go for the cheap.

LOL Plasma TV's are not the mainstay of the TV market. The LED HDTV's are... which Samsung is the absolute leader in. Even among plasma Samsung is close But really most TV's being sold are LED / LCD which Samsung clearly is the best.

Not only that Apple and Samsung are market leaders in smartphones and tablets. Apple, Asus and even Leveno make the best computers. Apple just dominates the portable MP3 market. LOL and Sony is last place in the console wars.

The reality hurts does it Sony fanboys?

HellzRazor4173d ago

LOL in what way does apple make better products, constantly out of date n lack features compared to rivals, they sell on name alone. If 1 thing sony does right that's quality. You 360 fanboys are crazy.

Very big lose to the electronics Industry!!!really very bad news!!!

Captain Tuttle4173d ago

I don't know, is it a loss? Do you feel that the CE industry is suffering in general? Is there a lack of innovation? Smartphones (arguably the biggest innovation in CE in a generation), PC's and Tablets are common place and were developed without much influence from the Japanese. Because they missed the boat doesn't mean that we suffered.

KingPin4173d ago

well maybe it is, but i still consider sony a name brand. the build quality of their products are still at a high level compared to other asian brands.

most chinese products are junky looking, or un trust worthy or counterfit knockoffs.
now that thats out of the way

I must say the principle of what goes up must come down and the bubble bursts come into play. Sony cant keep going in the green every year eventually it has to stop and fall. they also made bonehead investments and very stupid moves, needless company absorption and buyouts just because they could.

in the case of Sony they just got greedy and its true they lost guidance, they got bigger and bigger to no end, they need to cut back to 2 divisions Video game + limited tv, computers and technology and music. and they need to cut everything else, those are the real bread makers only when done right. and its not the era of Japanese consumer all big companies with big impact are going to feel this soon enough with in the next 3 years.

also very interesting article, saved for future debates.

wishingW3L4173d ago

while it's true that Chinese products are of low quality here we are talking about the Koreans.

kaozgamer4173d ago

Interesting article. It seems sony might survive by just focusing on their mobile and gaming divisions. Not sure about the others.
